Big Questions...
Interviewing Andrew Katay (Arrow 4)

Andrew Katay

Q. Do you have a mentor that was instrumental in your leadership journey?

Mentoring comes in all shapes and sizes. I have had a mentor with whom I have worked very closely for nearly 22 years now, who has been a friend, a boss, and now my bishop! He is very versatile.

Q. What is one lesson or saying that you take with you?

Two lessons in fact - the thing that keeps you sane in ministry is the sovereign goodness of God - we serve his world and his church, we look to him for fruit, and we cope with difficulty knowing he is the living and loving Lord. Less highbrow - when working with people and something goes wrong, always assume incompetence, not conspiracy!

Q.Looking at the new Arrow graduates what would you like to warn or advise them - what were you told that you took on-board and what did you ignore?

Advising Arrow graduates - the ever present danger for ministers is to think that there is some kind of magic bullet other than ministry of the word and prayer. there isn't. Stick to the core.

Many people seem to go through some form of mid-life crisis (or re-evaluation) and at the time they often feel they are the 'only' ones experiencing that trauma.
Q. Have you had a crisis time? Have you seen this in others?

Right in the middle of a mid-life crisis. Extremely helpful experience, to find out the idol;s that worrmed their way unknown into my heart, and which the disappointment of mid-life is revealing (Paul Tripp's book Lost in the Middle is extremely helpful in this context).

Q. Have you had a significant group of friends walk with you in your leadership career or family or spiritual journey? Are they the same for each group? Have you been intentional in selecting these people?

I have some terrific long term friends, who go back to Uni days. We have shared a lot of life together. We knew we were onto something special with each, and have been intentional in keeping it, but didn't particularly seek it out.

Q.What is your favorite bible character? (Not including Jesus)

Fav Bible character - the guys on this sidelines watching David slay Goliath - that's me watching Jesus!
